The Roots of Violence:
Wealth without work,
Pleasure without conscience,
Knowledge without character,
Commerce without morality,
Science without humanity,
Worship without sacrifice,
Politics without principles.
Mahatma Gandhi

If by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind,
someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions,
someone who cares about the welfare of the people –
their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs,
their civil rights and their civil liberties –
someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and
suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad,
if that is what they mean by a “Liberal”,
then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.”
John F. Kennedy

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired
signifies in the final sense,
a theft from those who hunger and are not fed,
those who are cold and are not clothed.
This world in arms is not spending money alone.
It is spending the sweat of its laborers,
the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.
This is not a way of life at all in any true sense.
Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower

  1. ‘Wealth without work’ – we see so many examples of this in society today. All of these quotes are thought provoking but that one stuck in my mind the most. Thanks as always Jonie.
